85 Fort St, Auckland is still in active use, but it has seen better days. The top level has some water damage, and the inevitable pigeon droppings are finding their way in. I made an interesting discovery in the basement, in the back of some small, dark, nested rooms off a long disused stair: a walk in safe. Dying quietly and alone, accidentally locked in a sound-proof steel and concrete room underneath a half-ruined building isn’t my idea of a good time; so do check that doors open both ways as you explore. Or let someone know where you’re going, so you’ll only moulder for a day or two until they send in the rescue dogs.
